The Wedgewood Story
We, the Walters family, were running a small veggie and rose farm, called Touchwood, in the KZN Midlands when serious disease struck and forced the "old bullets" to leave the farm. Perhaps we all need a wake up call to really appreciate our talents and the precious gift of life. Certainly for us it was the beginning of a new and exciting adventure with our three sons. An opportunity to start afresh, appreciate life and tap into our spiritual and talent reservoirs. 1999 saw us move to our new home outside of Hilton Village. Sandwiched between two forests we called our home "Wedgewood" and set about making it an exciting venue for classical music concerts entertaining friends and guests from around the province and hosting musicians from all over the world.
Gilly has always been passionate about good wholesome food and used her culinary skills to cater for the concert audiences. It was at one of these concerts that Gilly made her first batch of Wedgewood Nougat for delighted guests who encouraged her to start producing it for the retail market. We first started selling at the local farmer’s market and then as word traveled it grew one store at a time. Gilly’s kitchen stove soon became the hub of activity and the heart of an exciting small industry. We have now expanded into state-of-the-art facilities on our small farm, but Gilly’s kitchen still has us gathered around, whether it is entertaining friends, researching new products or just enjoying a work breakfast or lunch amongst family.
This new family lifestyle (parents, three sons, three daughters-in-law and an ever growing number of grandchildren) has us all living within a stone’s throw of each other and all but two daughters-in-law working in the factory. Life sure is not dull around here! Well this is our story and we hope that in some little way, our passion for good wholesome food and appreciation of family is able to reach you through our commitment to quality and unbending policy to use only the finest ingredients available.
