"Environmental and Social responsibility is part of our everyday lives here at Wedgewood. We believe it is the essence of a sustainable business, it gives us fulfilment and we have a lot of fun doing and."
Water treatment
We produce 100,000 litres of water and sewerage effluent per month. Due to the high sugar content of our wash-water, breaking down this effluent is a challenge. If handled simply by soak-aways there would be negative environmental impact long-term. We have taken up this challenge and our goal is to treat this water to a standard high enough so that we can use it directly on our family fruit and vegetable garden. Our first phase was to build a 7 chamber anaerobic septic tank. Having grossly underestimated the volume of waste-water we produce, we are now in the process of adding another, much larger, septic tank which will effectively increase the current capacity by 400%.
Biofuel
Thanks to Sustainable Steve's passion for clean air and the hike in crude oil prices, big brother Jon has developed his own Bio-Fuel plant that converts used fast-food oil into a high quality Diesel. Not only is the process 100% environmentally friendly, but the Bio-Diesel also emits 75% less carbon!! We now run our vehicles, biscuit oven, forklift and back-up power generator on old chip-fryer oil.
